The Six Mistakes of Man...

The Six Mistakes of Man:

  1. The illusion that personal gain is made up of crushing others.
  2. The tendency to worry about things that cannot be changed or corrected.
  3. Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it.
  4. Refusing to set aside trivial preferences.
  5. Neglecting development and refinement of the mind, and not acquiring the habit of reading and study.
  6. Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do.

- Marcus Tullius Cicero (106 B.C. – 43 B.C.)

It never ceases to amaze me that over two thousand years ago our ancestors were speaking and writing about the same concerns we face today. Cicero was a brilliant orator, lawyer, statesman, writer and poet among other things. He was the most influential man of his time and as such his words caused great fear in the hearts of authorities in the ancient Rome. In those days, however, dissidents were not treated kindly. He was executed in 43 B.C., his head and hands were displayed on the Speaker’s platform at the Forum in Rome.

It seems to me that although we have made great strides in human consciousness in certain areas, we still have got a long way to go in many others. The task of accelerating this process is upon each and every one of us. So, I highly encourage you to heed the words of Cicero and make every attempt to correct these mistakes in your own life. Only in this way can we affect change in the lives of those around us and ultimately propel humanity into yet higher levels of awareness.
